Bitter Root Mine

The remains of this mining venture are on the west side of the track. Oscar Schaaf and his wife came to the Animas Canyon in the 1930s and took over some placer claims that had been staked by a man named Brown. The mine was named by Oscar's wife for her former home in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana.
